Gazelle — Las Vegas Screening + Q&A with Nadir Sarıbacak

Part of the Gazelle Special Event Screening Series

A special one-night theatrical event.

Yakup arrives in New York with one goal: to bring his family to safety.

After being forced to leave Turkey due to political unrest, he builds a fragile life in the United States while trying to reunite with his wife and daughter. When he learns the legal process could take years, he faces an impossible choice: wait, or risk everything.

As the pressure of uncertainty grows, the struggle shifts inward. Time begins to blur. Relationships strain. What starts as survival slowly turns into a psychological unraveling.

Gazelle is a deeply human story of exile, identity, and the quiet cost of waiting.

Doors open at 5:00 PM

Special Event — Director in Attendance

The screening will be followed by a live conversation with director and lead actor Nadir Sarıbacak, joined by Iranian writer and City of Asylum Fellow Maryam Ala Amjadi, alongside Turkish poet, translator, and MFA candidate Hüseyin S. Arıkan.

Drawing from his own migration experience, Sarıbacak brings a rare level of authenticity to the film. The conversation will explore exile, displacement, memory, and the emotional realities of living between languages, borders, and identities, themes that resonate deeply with the work and lived experiences of both guest speakers.

Maryam Ala Amjadi is an Iranian writer, translator, and researcher currently serving as a City of Asylum Fellow (2023–2026). She is the author of multiple poetry collections and the translator of selected poems by Raymond Carver into Persian. Her work has been internationally recognized, including the Young Generation Poet Prize at the Yinchuan International Poetry Festival in China and the 2024 Elizabeth Alexander Award for her short story “The Ice Seller of Hell.” Her writing has been translated into several languages and published internationally.

Hüseyin S. Arıkan is a Turkish poet, translator, and MFA student at UNLV. His debut poetry collection, Bin Dün Var Yarında (A Thousand Yesterdays Tomorrow), received the Seyhan Erozcelik First Poetry Collection Award in 2019. Before moving to Las Vegas, he studied Political Science at Middle East Technical University in Ankara and later worked in K-12 education in Nevada. His work often moves between language, migration, and cultural memory.
